The Nobel Peace Prize Committee is broken.

The Nobel Prize Committee didn’t have to award the Nobel Peace Prize to President Trump and they didn’t have to discredit their organization, but that is what happened.

In 2009, when President Obama was a few weeks into his first term, he’d been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.  That’s fine.  At that level, his important friends are aware of the deadline and expect that Obama might do something splendid in the next 10 months to earn the award.

Obama never did anything worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize, but it was awarded to him anyway.  Blame the Nobel committee members for that.  They showed that the award is just political patronage to be handed out to their kind of people.

Obama deserves a small bit of credit for saying that he was surprised, deeply humbled, and did not view it as recognition of his own accomplishments.  If Obama was a confident man with more integrity, he would have politely declined the award.

By the time the Nobel Prize Committee had chosen their 2025 winner, President Trump has negotiated peace agreements to end a half-dozen conflicts.  Trump had also negotiated an agreement between Israel and Hamas to release hostages.  President Trump was not chosen.

The Nobel Prize Committee released a vague response mentioning courage and integrity.  They implied that President Trump was not their kind of people.  The Committee showed that they will award the prize based on friends and foes, not on the basis of accomplishments.

The Nobel Prize Committee is discredited.  The award means nothing.

The committee could have praised Trump’s conflict resolution and the Israel/Hamas deal, and said it was too early for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Instead, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader MarĂa Corina Machado.  To completely discredit the Nobel Prize Committee, Machado released a statement:

We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.

I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!

That makes the Nobel Peace Prize Committee look like a bunch of assholes.  In two months, the award ceremony will be held in Oslo, Norway, and Machado will have the opportunity to call them assholes in their own house.
