This Japanese fella posts on Twitter/X.  I like how he writes about America, so I may occasionally post on my site.  I’m not fond of embedded posts, so I cut and paste.

A small dish of trust.

A little dish of coins by the register.
“Take a penny, leave a penny.”

No lock. No guard.
Just honor.

I added three coins and bowed to it.
Someone had to keep the balance.

A cashier asked if I was okay.
The dish is safe, I told her.

“It’s just pennies.”
She has no idea what she’s protecting.

I carry a pouch of pennies now.
Not one dish runs dry on my watch.

In America, a dish of coins is left, and trusted.
Who decided that? I’d like to thank them.
