I am a sucker for futurism. My X/Twitter feed occasionally gets short movie clips with no context. Of course I am going to look into this futuristic utopia depicted in this Russian movie from 2022.
The movie and was followed up with a TV show that ran for three seasons. In normal letters, the title is Dva Holma and/or Dva Kholma. That translates to ‘Two Hills’. An alternate title is The No Man Zone.
That is all needlessly complicated, and it’s a shame because if it were dubbed in English, it could be popular on Netflix. Here’s the premise.
In 2140, a biological weapon has wiped out most of Earth’s population, and almost all men. Women establish a utopian society called ‘Two Hills’. A few men are kept in comfortable isolation to serve as sperm donors. The harmonious community is protected by force fields. A group of survivors, mostly men, live in the remains of a post-apocalyptic city.
The women live in a society that is technologically advanced, based on consensus, and everyone has a social media score to keep them in line. There is nature, but they don’t live naturally. Everything is organized and sterile. It does look cool.

Because the women have genetic engineering and live clean, they are all attractive and dress appealingly.

The men live by scavenging canned food and killing what they can in a ruined city.

The show makes fun of the differences between feminine and masculine societies, but both have powerful leaders. The matriarch forces consensus to maintain power, while the patriarch uses brute force. The plot is driven by people who rebel against both.
Two Hills is not hard science fiction, but the technology is plausible. The tone is light-hearted, and mostly comedic, but there is drama and action. It’s something like the shows, Hello Tomorrow or Pluribus. I thought it was much better than both of those.
Two Hills is different and refreshing. The show doesn’t cater to the male gaze, but doesn’t fear it. Women are attractive, and don’t hide that. The women are feminine, but that doesn’t mean they are weak. There are masculine men, but that doesn’t mean they are dumb.
What seems to be the first season is available on Youtube, but without subtitles. I used Youtube’s auto-translation feature to provide subtitles. It’s not great, but I had some idea what was happening. I’d give the show an 8/10, and would bump up the score if it were dubbed.
