Iran footballers labelled ‘wartime traitors’ after national anthem protest
Trump Champions Protections for Iranian Women’s Soccer Team
The Iranian women’s soccer was in Australia when Khamenie was killed. As a protest to the regime, they didn’t sing the Iranian national anthem. That could get them killed or tortured when they got back to Iran.
Australia wasn’t going to do anything to help, so Trump called the prime minister of Australia to straighten him out. After that, the prime minister offered protection.
Trump didn’t need to help those women, but he did.
I heard the story in bits and pieces, but corporate media isn’t going to put it all together. Trump is the hero, and they can’t have that. I wanted to see how much of it was true.
From the Independent:
Players from the Iranian women’s national football team refused to sing their national anthem before their Asian Cup match against South Korea in Australia on Monday.
An Iranian state television presenter, Mohammad Reza Shahbazi, subsequently branded the players “wartime traitors” and called for them to be “dealt with more severely”.
The women where definitely in danger if they returned to Iran.
From Sky News:
The Australian Iranian Council pleaded the Australian government to take measures to ensure the safety of the group in a petition signed by thousands of Australians.
However when asked about the issue on Sunday, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Matt Thistlethwaite said the team would receive “no preferential treatment” if they sought asylum.
“Any sporting team or member of a sporting team gets no preferential treatment in terms of visas coming to Australia,” the Labor MP said.
The Australian government wasn’t going to do anything to help the women.
From Time
In an earlier post Monday morning, Trump was more critical of the Australian government, suggesting that the country wasn’t doing enough to protect the Iranian team—and pledged that the U.S. would take in the players if Australia didn’t grant them asylum.
“Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed,” Trump said in an earlier Truth Social post. “Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give ASYLUM. The U.S. will take them if you won’t.”
It’s possible that something else compelled the Australian government to support the Iranian women, but it looks like it was all Trump.
“I just spoke to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, of Australia, concerning the Iranian National Women’s Soccer Team. He’s on it!” Trump said. “Five have already been taken care of, and the rest are on their way. Some, however, feel they must go back because they are worried about the safety of their families, including threats to those family members if they don’t return.”
I remain impressed that Trump finds the time and effort to resolve issues that nobody else can be bothered to address.
People can keep hating Trump, but they can’t pretend that they care about women.
