John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, was once my favorite book. 

It wouldn’t land the same way if I re-read it now, but it’s still a great work.  I am not eager to see the East of Eden miniseries that is premiering today on Netflix.

East of Eden Review:  Where do monsters come from?

Netflix’s East of Eden is a compelling and thoughtful adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel which takes the themes of that book and expands on them with a modern sensibility.

Expanding on timeless themes by adding modern sensibilities is never an improvement.  It’s like expanding on chocolate ice cream by adding pumpkin spice.

On the plus side, Zendaya is not in the Netflix series.
