There are almost a thousand billionaires in the US, but only one seems to be doing anything fun.
The Tesla Diner in West Hollywood has it’s first anniversary on Tuesday. Since it’s a few thousand miles away, I didn’t know anything about it until I saw an article about the diner’s first year of operation. Based on the Youtube video, it looks creative, interesting and not a big rip off. The diner clearly reflects Elon Musk’s personal interests and is on-brand.
I understand that extraordinary people aren’t ordinary. A person doesn’t build a billion dollar business while having the same ambition, skill set and thought processes as everyone else. Still, there are almost a thousand billionaires in the US. A few of them should be pursuing some extravagant passion projects that we’d hear about.
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon, and is living what seems to be a teen boy’s fantasy. He has a fat-ass yacht and a plush wife. Both seem kind of gauche, and don’t show much depth or sophistication. He’s got Blue Origins rocket company, and he used it to send a hen party into space.
The rest of them are funding philanthropic causes and egghead research institutes while they build luxury bunkers in New Zealand. It’s all so boring.
More billionaires should have “You know what would be cool?” ideas that normal people can appreciate.
Instead, millionaire celebrities are doing that. Joe Rogan moved to Austin, opened a comedy club, got friends to relocate and made the city into a hub for stand up comedy. Bill Maher and Woody Harrelson opened the head shop they always dreamed of. Talented Youtube creatives are making movies, Obsession, Backrooms, Iron Lung and Talk to Me, that were not expensive to produce, but made that money back dozens of times over.
The richest guy in the world is making life better by pushing the boundaries in a half-dozen beneficial industries, and he still has time to build a nerdy fun diner so people can get a good meal while charging their electric vehicle. It’s weird that there are still people who hate him just for his efforts to stop government graft and corruption.
