I had an exchange student from Brazil. Every couple of weeks when we had some free time, he would describe to the class some aspect of life in Brazil.
He said that when he was around 10 years old, a popular activity for he and his friends was to kick soccer balls up in to trees. The intent was to hit a monkey, and knock it out of the tree. When the monkey hit the ground, it might be stunned for a few seconds. They’d rush up, grab the monkey, and stuff it into a pillow case.
The plan was to sell the monkeys to pet stores. They caught plenty of monkeys, but to his knowledge, no kid ever managed to sell a monkey to anyone. No pet store or anyone else wanted a random feral monkey, so the kid’s mom would make him release the monkey back into the wild.
He said it was pretty stupid, but they were as dumb as kids everywhere.
I don’t know what made me think of that.
