Sir Keir Starmer has said any Ukraine peace deal would require a “US backstop” to deter Russia from attacking its neighbour again.
Speaking after a hastily convened meeting with European leaders in Paris, he said a “US security guarantee was the only way to effectively deter Russia”, and vowed to discuss the “key elements” of a peace deal with US President Donald Trump in Washington next week.
The morning isn’t going so great either.

Dozens of Hollywood’s smallest stars will stage a mass protest outside Disney Studios this week to rail against the controversial new Snow White movie – which has replaced the seven dwarfs with computer-generated ‘cartoons.’
I’m with the little fellas on this one.
I’ve never seen Sparky like this, and now I’m concerned.
Tim Walz to launch national tour of town halls in Republican House districts
Tim Walz is headed back out on the road – this time, for a tour of House districts represented by Republicans who have stopped holding in-person town halls amid the raucous receptions some of their colleagues have gotten across the country.
Good for Walz. He may not persuade many people, but it’s always a good idea to get out and talk to the people. Trump and his people are moving fast, and Democrats must feel like they should do something. At least Walz has a constructive plan. His colleagues could learn from him.
Sparky might be one of those people who identify as a cat. Everybody has heard those stories about middle school kids who demand litter boxes in the restrooms. If that ever happened, then the students were probably just screwing around. Sparky may be trolling, but he really seems to like cat toys.
He is carrying a fake mouse that tweets like a bird. Sparky carries it everywhere. We’ve done some trials where I toss the mouse into a dark room. So far, he finds it easily.
I might be one of those people who think that dogs are people. The logic works like this: Autistic people are people, dogs are autistic, therefore, dogs are people. That logic seems a little shaky, but Sparky says it checks out. On the other hand, Sparky can’t figure out how blankets work.
No worries. Sparky is back to his gallant old self.
Sparky may have become agoraphobic.
I had nothing to do with this. Brother and I were working in the garage, so Sparky was on a long leash.
