This New York Times editorial about teaching covers real problems that are collapsing public education, but nothing here is new.  These problems were evident the entire time I’ve been teaching, but Covid allowed the wreckers and degenerates to go all in.  They are opposed by parent groups, but it’s a tough slog.

A Good Shed

My nephew just called about the shed he intends to build.  After my own shed experience, I am well-acquainted with shed design and build.

Prior to getting the retaining wall and garage built, I knew the shed would be in the way.  This shed has been in this spot since about 1971, when the solarium was built and the driveway was moved to this side of the house.   Rather than tear it down, I decided to move it.

Science Alert: China considers Moon bases in lava tubes.

On the Moon, astronauts will need protection from a different set of hazards. They’ll have to contend with cosmic and solar radiation, meteorites, wild temperature swings, and even impact ejecta.  The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has found hundreds of lunar ‘skylights,’ locations where a lava tube’s ceiling has collapsed, making a natural opening into the tube.
