Bill Gates thinks that he is a Big Brain, who can fix the world if we let him. If Gates is predicting vague doom from AI, then the threat is to him, not us.
Instead of making Windows and Microsoft Office better, Bill Gates poured billions into trying to be a global hero.
The Gates Foundation was involved in education about the same time I was. Their “Small Schools Initiative” and Common Core learning standards didn’t improve learning, but wasted time and money. Schools should have been going back to basics as evidenced by the Mississippi Miracle.
The Gates Foundation has spent $100 billion, so they have probably done some good for somebody.
Bill Gates and the technocratic elite think that they know best. They have the money, but not the power, to restructure societies.
“You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” he said. “And that has to be a required thing. And it will be a little bit of overhead for the industry, but not a dramatic slowing of what they’re doing.”
Bill Gates, and people like him, are too eager to decide what things should be required.
“not a dramatic slowing” sounds too much like the “two weeks to slow the spread” we were told at the start of the Covid lockdown.
Covid was a real threat and did kill people. The elderly were at the greatest risk. Even though there was little risk to young people, the government response to Covid did severe generational damage.
Mass migration from the poorest countries to the richest countries has made life more difficult for low and middle income citizens. In the US, abuse of the H1B system has reduced opportunities for Americans in technical fields.
Over-regulation related to climate change, general environmental concerns and hypothetical threats to health and safety have left all of us with a lower standard of living. With the advances in technology in the last few decades, energy should be cheap and reliable, but it is the opposite.
These issues that are plaguing the Western world, do not apply to China. As the quality of life in America and Europe stagnates or declines, China is rapidly advancing.
Whatever safeguards and monitoring that Bill Gates insists upon, will not apply to China. If AI can actually cause a sequence of events that cause the deaths of a billion people, I don’t want China to decide which billion people are expendable.
As computers were just getting practical, there was a clever saying:
To err is human; To really foul things up, it takes a computer.
That’s pretty clever for the 1970’s. Fifty years later, we might add to the wisecrack.

Seriously Bill, when you suggest that an AI might initiate a sequence of events that kills a billion people, we need a sequence of plausible events to reach that outcome. You can’t get there without governmental participation.
I do not trust Bill Gates, his globalist associates or politicians to regulate AI without stacking the deck so they win again.
