I didn’t even like the original movie, The War of the Roses, but knew the casting for the remake, The Roses, was a mistake.  It’s been in theaters for three weeks, and it’s not looking good.

Theaters take about half of the money coming from ticket sales and studios have additional costs for marketing and distribution.  Hollywood accounting is sketchy, but the rule-of-thumb is that ticket sales have to be about 3 times the production budget for a movie to make money.

The War of the Roses (1989)  Budget: $29 million  Ticket Sales:  $169 million

The Roses (2025)  Budget:  $20 million  Ticket Sales:  $41 million

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are great actors in the appropriate roles.  Disney couldn’t even make money on a low-budget movie with quality actors.  Since making movies is there business, they should be better at this.
