‘Historic first’: Massive US military jet airlifts nuclear microreactor to Utah
The US Departments of Energy and Defense transported a small nuclear reactor, or microreactor, via cargo plane for the very first time on Sunday.
To be more accurate, three C-17 Globemaster carried eight modules that make up a Valar Ward250 nuclear micro-reactor.
Micro-reactors are new technology, and it’s expected that the electricity produced will be expensive, something like 10 times what we pay for residential power. They aren’t intended for residential power.
Russia currently leads in the operation of small modular reactors, utilizing the RITM-200 and RITM-400 series for its Arctic icebreaker fleet.
The Russian RITM-200 needs to be refueled every 10 years, lasts for 60 years and puts out 50,000,000 Watts.
If a C-17 can carry it, then so can a SpaceX Starship.
A moon base could get a lot done with 50 MegaWatts.
