NYT: Rwanda and Congo Sign U.S.-Brokered Peace Treaty
Bongo, bongo, bongo, I don’t want to leave the Congo, oh no, no no no.
That’s about all I know about the Congo, but President Trump’s administration just brokered a peace deal between the Congo and Rhodesia. That deserves to be recognized. Since it’s the eighth peace deal his administration has negotiated, it seems mundane to us, but could lead to peace between groups who have been killing each other for decades. That’s something.
The NYT article is snarky, and tries to minimize President Trump’s contributions to world peace. No peace agreement is guaranteed to proceed smoothly and be a permanent end to a lengthy conflict, but it’s hard to argue that any US president has done more to end war in shitty little countries that nobody else cares about.
The Congo and Rhodesian delegations recognize the role the US played in getting to a deal.
Congo’s foreign minister, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, called the peace agreement “a remarkable milestone.” But she also pleaded with Mr. Trump to “stay committed, stay on board.”
“We need the United States to make sure that this agreement holds and that you hold us accountable,” Ms. Wagner said.
It’s also refreshing to have a president who puts America first.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump indicated that the agreement would allow the United States to gain access to critical minerals in Congo.
America does well, when President Trump does good.
The trade and tariffs approach to international diplomacy seems to be much more successful than USAID handing out bags of cash to corrupt NGO’s trying to destabilize small countries.
