Everything to know about ‘Stargate’ from Amazon MGM Studios

The Stargate franchise never had the high profile of Star Trek or Star Wars, and there hasn’t been a new TV show or movie in 15 years, but it was inevitable that a studio would pick up this IP.

You’d have to be pretty dumb to get excited about any new adaptation until more is known, but I am cautiously optimistic.

Stargate has a promising premise.  A stargate exists in our world, in our time, so no expensive sets or CGI are required for the base of operations.  The team travels through the stargate to some distant place in the galaxy.

Since they travel to a new world, whatever happens there doesn’t rely on continuity with the 17 seasons of TV shows, web series, animated series, three movies or video games.  There is a committed fan base, they can tell their own story or draw from the existing IP.

Stargate SG-1 ran for 10 years and has an IMDB score of 8.4, Stargate Atlantis ran for 5 years and has an IMDB score of 8.1, Stargate Universe ran for 2 years with an IMDB score of 7.6.

It shouldn’t be difficult to come up with a good adaptation if they keep it simple.  The cast needs a manly man, a womanly woman, a nerdy academic, and a big dumb guy.  Richard Dean Anderson should show up a couple of times to make the fans happy.

Disney would screw this up.  Even if they are done with their DEI hectoring, they don’t have the talent left to write a good show.

Amazon Studios is uneven, but they have put out some good adaptations.  Reacher, The Man in the High Castle, and Fallout were all done well.  I hope it works out.
