BBC:  US and Denmark reach deal over Greenland after Trump annexation threats

This is a big strategic deal, but the BBC and other media may get hung up on  President Trump’s initial comments about seizing Greenland.

An attack coming over the Arctic has been a concern for decades.  Canada has always been a lazy ally, so the US established Thule Air Base in the north of Greenland.  That defense agreement between Denmark and the US, was limited and restrictive.

That’s why President Trump started the Greenland conversation that journalists didn’t understand.

The new Greenland agreement has several advantages.

  • The agreement remains in place whether or not the US or Denmark remain in NATO, or even if NATO doesn’t exist.
  • The agreement remains in place even if Greenland becomes independent of Denmark.
  • The US isn’t required to get approval from Denmark to establish additional military installations.
  • Foreign nations are not permitted to invest in, manage or establish operations in Greenland without US approval.

President Trump’s team got everything the US needs for our strategic interest.  The full agreement hasn’t been released yet, so we don’t know what this will cost us.
