Everything is a trade off.
Sparky likes car rides, but is having a problem with stairs. I like Sparky, but have a problem cutting his nails in the house. We usually trim his claws on the deck, but that’s covered with snow.
Sparky doesn’t have much traction on wooden stairs, and long nails make it worse. Maybe stair treads would help. The stair treads I found on Amazon have non-slip rubber backing, and don’t need to be anchored to the stairs. I’m skeptical.
To anchor the treads, I’m using snaps. That will keep them in place, but allow the treads to be removed for cleaning.
The socket part of the snap will go on the tread, and comes in two pieces.
I made a template to get the holes in the right spot on each tread. A soldering pencil is the easiest way to make a hole in rubber or plastic.
Snaps aren’t difficult. The post of the button goes through the hole, then the socket is pressed on to the post. A punch is used to mushroom the post, securing both sides of the snap.
I used the same template to locate the male side of the snap on the stair, then used a small wood screw to secure the snap.
Attaching treads to the stair took a minute.
The whole project took a couple of hours, and the treads were the only parts I didn’t have on hand. Over time, they will lay down flatter, but for now, I’m satisfied.
Sparky has more traction, but doesn’t entirely trust the new surface.
