Somehow I missed Oblivion when it came out in 2013.  This is the kind of science fiction I like.  Nothing to do with time travel, not a futuristic soap opera, humans aren’t the bad guys and it’s not all CGI action scenes.  Just a great story with cool technology and aliens.

It’s a very nice looking movie.  Everything looks almost artistic.  A couple of scenes look to have been designed to make Tom Cruise look cool.  And he does.

The futuristic tech looks like it was all designed by Apple and is clean and interesting.

The primitive stuff looks scavenged and comfortable.

The wreckage on Earth looks overgrown and haunting.

The premise is that aliens attack Earth.  We win the war, but at the cost of going full nuclear.  Since everything is screwed and radioactive, humans moved to Titan, a moon of Jupiter.  Crews are rotated to Earth to maintain equipment that is harvesting resources to be taken to Titan.  Some remaining scavengers have been sabotaging equipment, so the crews do security duty also.

There are a bunch of twists and turns, heroism and a happy ending.  It’s much better than those Sci-Fi movies that try to make a grand statement or make a deep philosophical point.  8.5/10
