When I took Sparky out this morning at 8 am, there were little spider webs all over the place. They are probably always there, but the dew made them easy to spot.
Here’s a close up.
I give spiders get the benefit of the doubt, but not enough to invite Sparky over to get in the photo. I don’t want to see Sparky all bound up in silk like Frodo after Shelob finished. Sparky would accept his situation with his typical alacrity, but I’d be upset.
If the webs aren’t obvious in the initial photo, here is a highlighted version.
The entire lawn is not covered, but there are enough to make me curious about grass spiders. For some reason, there is a dedicated Spiders in Ohio website.
The webs may be from the Scarlet Sheetweaver. These are about a half-inch long, and have mildly toxic venom.
The other candidate is the American Grass Spider. These are about a quarter-inch long, and pinchers that are too small to bite people.
When Sparky gets philosophical, we occasionally sit in the grass and talk. Knowing about these spiders make me not like that idea so much.
Looking up the spiders, I found a phone app called Picture Insect. It rated pretty highly, so I installed it.
